The suburb of Tingalpa is located approximately ten kilometres east of the Brisbane CBD. It is surrounded by the neighbouring suburbs of Murarrie, Hemmant, Wynnum West, Cannon Hill, Wakerley, Carina, Belmont, and Gumdale. Tingalpa is predominantly a residential suburb which has many main roads running through its boundaries. Some of these include Wynnum Road, the Gateway Motorway, Manly Road, Belmont Road, Wondall Road, New Cleveland Road, Bognor Street, Hemmant And Tingalpa Road, and many more. Although its origin is uncertain, it is most believed that Tingalpa was named after Tingalpa Creek which, in 1841, was surveyed and named Tingulpa which is most likely derived from an Aboriginal expression. The suburb continued to develop with the opening of a post office, a church, a hotel and a primary school which were all generally centred around the Wynnum and Manly Road intersection. This little area was made even more prominent when, in 1919, a striking diggers’ war memorial was constructed. The land that is now being developed into residential areas were previously devoted to small farmlets and semi-industrial developments.
